a weekend reset

L and I have been exhausted.

Tired from the state of the world, demands of work, and almost being puppy parents for one whole year without a break. We all know how it feels to be depleted. Your body tells you it’s time for a real break and eventually, your brain gives in.

So you decide to do a weekend trip, but committing to this small thing wasn’t easy. There are a million things do around the house- inside and out, now that things are sprouting which also means our very “organic” landscaping. Can you relate?

But, we went away forgoing our duties and all. We spent the weekend in Saugatuck, MI, far enough to feel like a getaway, but close enough to drive just for a few days.

All vacations have a purpose. Is it to explore? Is it to pack in as much as possible? Is it for the kids? Is it for rest? Deciding on for what is important and makes the trip purposeful. We wanted our weekend getaway to be a time of rest and resetting. For us, this meant food and nature. And going off-season which we often do makes it for a peaceful stay.

We ate, went on three hikes- two that led to Lake Michigan, browsed downtown Saugatuck that had a pace of a leisurely stroll with lots of local art, and found a fun outdoor coffee spot. All restful.

When we came back, we realized just how much a weekend can do. Sometimes, when going away for a week seems harder to do, a weekend when you’re planning to do house chores and errands anyway, putting our mental health first and stepping away from our homes might be just what we all need-

even more than a tidy home.
